Edmund de Waal is a world-famous ceramicist. Having spent thirty years making attractive pots―which are then offered, gathered, and passed on―he has a selected experience of the key lives of items. while he inherited a suite of 264 tiny jap wooden and ivory carvings, known as netsuke, he desired to understand who had touched and held them, and the way the gathering had controlled to outlive.

And so starts off this terribly relocating memoir and detective tale as de Waal discovers either the tale of the netsuke and of his relatives, the Ephrussis, over 5 generations. A nineteenth-century banking dynasty in Paris and Vienna, the Ephrussis have been as wealthy and revered because the Rothchilds. but by way of the top of the area struggle II, while the netsuke have been hidden from the Nazis in Vienna, this number of very small carvings was once all that remained in their gigantic empire.
